The Ebell Wins a Place on ‘Doors Open California’ Weekend

The Ebell has won one of only 50 places on the Doors Open California weekend, where historic buildings open their doors to the public and ‘tell an untold story.’  Held  June 11-12, 2022, Doors Open California is an event spearheaded by the California Preservation Foundation (CPF), the longest-running statewide organization dedicated to the protection of California’s diverse cultural resources and historic places.

No doubt, one of the attractions for the organizers (apart from our wonderful building, of course!) was the fact that during that same weekend The Ebell will be hosting a celebration of the centennial of Judy Garland‘s birth.  As many of you will be aware, Judy Garland was discovered on our stage by MGM producer George Sidney when she was still known as “Baby” Frances Gumm.  Part of the festivities will include a display of some of her most famous costumes.  The Doors Open event will include an exclusive backstage tour of the Theatre, a discussion of our connections to famous historical women like Garland, and a guided viewing of the costumes, on the third floor of the campus.

Judy Garland’s family is apparently extremely excited to be hosting this event at The Ebell.  According to sources, “they love it!”

Keep a lookout for Ticket information for this once-in-a-lifetime event!

“Baby” Frances Gumm

How we remember her: Judy Garland, born June 10, 1922
