Mrs. Sumner P. Hunt became the 5th president of the Ebell of Los Angeles in 1902. Her husband, Sumner P. Hunt is the architect to whom the city owes so many notable buildings including our own! ⠀
⠀
Mrs. Hunt became the president of The Ebell Building Association in April 1904. This Association, incorporated in May 1903, was a stock company with a capital stock of $50,000 and had powers to issue stock, buy and sell real estate and build and own buildings. This Association was formed because the Ebell Club as a literary organization had no power to issue stock. ⠀
⠀
With eyes on a new home for their club, the Association sold 2,000 shares at $10.00 each to it's members in order to repay Mrs. Burdette (2nd president of The Ebell) who had secured a lot on Hope Street and Ninth for $14,500. They later sold that lot in March 1906 for $31,900 making a nice profit to be later used to purchase a lot on Figueroa. ⠀
⠀
The Ebell women were smart, savvy and if they couldn't find a way, they made one. We wouldn't be here today if it weren't for these amazing women. We celebrate them today and everyday. Happy #Women'sHistoryMonth!! ⠀
Cheers to a rockin' weekend! ⠀

Today is #loveyourpetday2021 and we thought it would be a great time to introduce our Director of Special Events, Anessa and her sweet green cheek conure @passionfruitbird
The first pic is at The Ebell where he goes to work with mom sometimes. Second picture is her wedding day in Yosemite!
@necheska and husband Glenn take Passhie everywhere they can. He’s been to 7 National Parks and loves to hike and camp too!
He’ll be 16 in June. Green cheek conures can live 30-35 years so plenty of time for more adventures!
Anessa started out as an Ebell waiter in 2005 and worked her way up to Director. She is coming up on 16 years here in June! 🙌🏼👏🏼
What pets are lucky to get your love today and everyday? Please tell us in the comments!
Happy anniversary to Marsha & Christopher, 2/19/17.

Our kitchen hasn't had any action since Mid-March, 2020.
Did you know that we can handle an 800 person event out of this industrial kitchen? Anything above that entails branching out into the West lot and we've done it many times. The Grammy Nominee reception is one of them.
Looking forward to entertaining again and cooking up a storm with our amazing culinary team. Counting the days...

8 years ago today, Iriet & Marty were married at The Ebell of Los Angeles. They were engaged 9 years ago in NY during Valentine's week. They now live in NY with their beautiful cat, Catherine. They love to travel, play golf, visit CA and spend time with friends and family. Not to mention their love for Star Wars!
They are an amazing and fun couple and we love them dearly. Forever and always, they will be part of our #EbellLegacy

Grab your girlfriends and have a fun #Galentinesday!
Did you know that Galentine's Day was first celebrated in Season 2, episode 16 of the show "Parks and Recreation"? The female cast members celebrated the holiday with brunch and a gift exchange on 2/11/10. @parksandrec
In 2011 it was a trending topic on Twitter.
In 2014 Galentine's Day was celebrated again on "Parks and Recreation". This annual unofficial holiday and a cultural phenomenon is celebrated all over the world!

It's National Pizza Day!!
One of our favorite tray passed hors d'oeuvres is flatbread, the fancy name for pizza. Guests will scope out the waiters to get a slice of our margherita and/or pepperoni flatbread.
We love being taste testers and Chef always saves some for us.
Now that you know it's #nationalpizzaday, what's on your menu today?

On this day in 2020, Rolake and Justice "jumped the broom", a tradition widespread among African Americans, popularized in the 1970's by the novel and miniseries "Roots" but originating in the mid 19th century as a practice in antebellum slavery in the United States.
After the wedding ceremony and reception, a traditional Yoruba wedding ceremony took place followed by a Nigerian buffet.
It was a joyous celebration filled with love, tradition, family and friends.

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and we have a fun throwback to share. In 2018, we hosted a showcase event with one element entitled “sporty” and arranged by @firstpick.
Isn’t this a fun tablescape? We love all of the details from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter menu designed by @jasminmichelledesigns to the turf table runner from @brighteventrentals and the football inspired cake by @thebutterend.

In 1900, Mrs. Williams T. Lewis became the 4th President of The Ebell of Los Angeles. In 1901 the ladies moved the club into Cumnock Hall at 1500 Figueroa Street where they remained for 4 years until their new clubhouse was built. They had over 500 members at the time.
While President, Mrs. Lewis inspired the club to participate in many movements for civic betterment.
In May 1901, U.S. President William McKinley was a special guest to the city of Los Angeles. Mrs. Lewis along with 5 other Ebell members rode on horseback in La Fiesta de las Flores de Los Angeles parade. The horses were adorned with yellow mustard and the ladies wore yellow dresses, black gloves and feather trimmed hats. They carried black wands with yellow ribbons. That year was the first and only time The Ebell had an entry. In September of that same year, McKinley was shot by an assassin and died.
Mrs. Lewis was from Racine, WI and lived in CA in the winter. The later years of her life were spent in FL although much of her time was spent in Paris, where she was a member of The American Women’s Club. She was a member of the National Council of Women, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and an honorary member of the Wisconsin Federation of Clubs. She retained Ebell membership until her death.

Have you been inside our 1238 seat Broadway-style theatre?
#wilshireebelltheatre is host to everything from podcasts to First Ladies.
Not sure if the theatre will be able to host more than filming this year but fingers crossed we will!
Did you know that we can host screenings in our parking lot? Our East Lot is over 46,000 square feet and can hold 90 cars for a screening style set-up. Last weekend we rented the lot to a film maker screening her documentary, Wild Daze that is up for Oscar nomination consideration.
Wild Daze trailer is posted in our IGTV. You can watch this movie on Apple TV+.
The Ebell of Los Angeles takes pride in supporting filmmakers, especially documentarians. The education that documentaries provide to our community and world at large is part of our mission, “to participate in and encourage the educational, cultural and social growth of the diverse LA community”
We encourage you to watch the film and support Phyllis Stuart.
