President’s Message

from Patricia Lombard, 64th President of The Ebell of Los Angeles

May 3, 2021

Spring has sprung and life in our Ebell world feels more hopeful.

If you have been in the neighborhood, you have seen that our historic campus is a beehive of filming activity for a major motion picture through the end of the month. We are thankful for the filming rental fees which come very close to covering several months of our operating costs. I am also very grateful to our dedicated staff who is keeping a close eye on our dear building as the movie makers do their magic.

Speaking of staff, our General Manager, Philip Miller, will be celebrating 16 years with us this summer. In the spring of 2019, well before the pandemic, Philip announced his intention to retire effective June 2021. His announcement gave the Board ample time to plan for an orderly succession. Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic we are moving ahead to honor his desire to retire and we deeply appreciate his willingness to work with us to ensure an orderly transition of leadership.

The Board has contracted with a search firm, Shirley Associates, based here in Larchmont Village, to help us find a successor. We have developed a job description that outlines the ideal candidate for what we think is an exciting opportunity to lead The Ebell at this critical time in our history.

Philip Miller, our General Manager, who is retiring.

The job description and our vision moving forward have been guided by our strategic plan developed several years ago that many of you participated in developing. Philip’s retirement provides us with an opportunity to move toward our strategic goals. As we move out of the pandemic, we are pleased that our strategic planning process will provide excellent guidance.

We are deeply grateful to Philip for his 16 years of service to The Ebell and we intend to build upon the success of the organization and the foundation he built before the pandemic. We are searching for an Executive Director with significant nonprofit management expertise who will lead us. We are pleased to have Philip’s support with this transition since this past year has been so challenging. We are very pleased that our current staff will be continuing and will continue to be part of The Ebell.

We have posted the position description on our website and urge you to take a look and share it with any individuals who might be appropriate candidates for The Ebell.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or suggestions. I am deeply grateful for everyone’s support of The Ebell. Thankfully, things are looking up!

Finally, I’d like to extend greetings for a Happy Mother’s Day to all of you who have mothered someone along the way.
