Ellis Haizlip, AKA Mr. Soul

In 2019, Ebell members enjoyed a very special program presented by Melissa Haizlip, the daughter of former Ebell President Shirlee Haizlip.  Melissa shared the inspiring story of her uncle, Ellis Haizlip, and the film she made about him.

After years of determined effort, Melissa successfully produced a wonderful documentary film chronicling Ellis Haizlip’s groundbreaking program, Soul, the first television program showcasing the arts and culture of African Americans.  From 1968 to 1973 Ellis brought forward now renowned Black writers, singers, musicians, actors and dancers in a variety show for public television station WNDT(now WNET) in New York City.  Clips from Melissa Haizlip’s film lit up the story she had to tell when she spoke at The Ebell.  Now, thanks to PBS, which screened the film on Monday, February 15, anyone who didn’t catch the showing, can see it streamed!

The film, entitled Mr. Soul, can be seen here.
