Rosaly Lopes on lip of active volcanoAn evening of discovery: Volcanoes on Earth and the Solar System

By age four, in her native Brazil, Rosaly got hooked on the idea of space exploration. By eight, astronomy was her dream. The fascination grew with each Apollo mission, and once learning Apollo 13’s team included a woman…and that a woman could become a NASA scientist…her sights were set.

We’ll hear about her discoveries in planetary geology as a volcanologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory working with NASA, lately researching the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. You may have seen her on NOVA or the Discovery Channel telling of these missions.

Rosaly’s idea of a good time is exploring an erupting volcano right here on Earth, too. She’s in the Guinness Book of World Records for discovering the most active volcanoes. Her list of prestigious awards, books and publications is pages long, and asteroid rosalylopes is out there in space. Learn how her own star has risen, and the thrills being a woman in STEM can bring.
