Book Chamber | July 19
- This event has passed.
Tuesday, July 19, 2022 — 6:30 pm
Pre-Zoom days, the Book Chamber met in the Ebell’s archetypal library: glass-enclosed bookcases running along the walls; comfy sofa and chairs for readers to sink into, to curl up on, for serious reading; monumental reading table, reminiscent of a Jacobean feast, around which we gather; library-prototypic art, including a solid bronze bust and atmospheric oil paintings; oriental carpet to quiet one’s tread; French doors leading to the outdoors balcony for our monthly meetings on hot summer days…The Ebell library, so apt for a discussion of The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict. July is Historical Fiction month, and this book presents Bella da Costa Green, an African-American secretly passing as white, hired by JP Morgan to care for his palatial library. (Déjà vu: Remember the secret of Julie La Verne in Edna Ferber’s Showboat – Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein’s musical?)
Our virtual Ebell programs are free, but donations are greatly appreciated and help the organization during these unprecedented times.
