The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction, by Linda Gordon

In 1904, New York nuns brought forty Irish orphans to a small Arizona mining town to be placed with Catholic families. The Catholic families were Mexican, as was the majority of the population. Soon the town’s Anglos, appalled that white children were being raised by Mexicans, kidnapped the children.

The nuns sued to retrieve the children and return them to the welcoming Mexican homes. The case rose all the way up to the Supreme Court.  Did the court back the nuns or the kidnappers?  Read to find out.

Join us August 16 to discuss this Bancroft Prize-winning book and the misguided racism that drove the abductions.
