The film Out of Africa rates just 62% on Rotten Tomatoes and was panned by Vincent Canby of the New York Times, Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune, and Pauline Kael of The New Yorker.
But don’t judge a book by its movie.
The book Out of Africa has earned a readership of millions since it was published in 1937. The tale of Dinesen’s capable operation of an 800-acre Kenyan coffee plantation, the vivid portrayal of the sumptuous African landscapes, and the passionate love story between Dinesen and the British big-game hunter, Denys Finch Hatton is utterly engrossing Read it. Re-read it.
And join us virtually on May 18 (the 3rd Tuesday)…
