OUR MISSION: The Ebell of Los Angeles (The Ebell) is an educational and philanthropic organization founded by women, for women in 1894.  Our mission is to participate in and encourage the educational, cultural, and social growth of a diverse Los Angeles community, as well as conserve and protect our historic clubhouse, grounds, collections and the Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

Current Position Available

 

Executive Director (Regular, Full-Time)

The current General Manager is retiring, and the board has elected to change the job title to Executive Director. The new title reflects a desire on the board’s part to emphasize broader visibility of the role going forward. Along with the change comes an increased emphasis on responsibilities such as membership, programming, development, external relations and raising the visibility of the Ebell in a wider geographic community.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the new Executive Director will have overall responsibility for the operations of the Ebell and the execution of its mission.  The successful candidate will work with the board to articulate the vision and direction shaping the organization’s future. Building on the current strategic plan, the ED will devise and implement long and short-term plans that will ensure that the vision will blossom.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors through the President, and presently manages a team of eight full-time staff responsible for membership, programs, fiscal management, event rentals, theatre management, building maintenance, communications and database administration.  There is also half-time support for human resource management, graphic design and event administration.  Prior to the pandemic, the staff consisted of 21 fulltime employees including an in-house chef, two part-time staff and many outsourced event staff including bartenders, cooks, stage crew, tech, doormen, ushers, concession and parking attendants.

 

AREAS OF OVERSIGHT AND MANAGEMENT

Financial Oversight

  • Responsibility for the fiscal integrity of the Ebell.
  • Works as a strategic partner to the board to develop both short and long-term financial goals and plans for the organization, including a proposed annual budget and monthly updates.
  • Ensures the acquisition, utilization and maintenance of systems to provide the appropriate control and accountability of all funds, physical assets, and other property.
  • Ensures maximum resource utilization to maintain the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Negotiates and executes business contracts, notes, agreements and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.
  • Regularly monitors Ebell financial accounts and reconciliations.
  • Manages tax preparation and reporting in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.

 

Revenue Generation and Fundraising

  • Assesses current revenue needs and develops plans that lead to diversified funding sources. This includes identifying and cultivating grants, foundations, major donor prospects, as well as corporate and community partners, rental opportunities and other sources of revenue.
  • Oversees fund development and revenue management for building maintenance needs and club operations consistent with the Ebell’s values, mission, vision and strategic plans.
  • Oversees the establishment of an endowment campaign and seeks the philanthropic resources necessary for future building preservation projects. Given the ongoing development of a master building plan, including an earthquake retrofit strategy, improved accessibility and improved climate control needs, this will become an increasingly important responsibility in the coming years.

 

Board Relations

  • Reports to and collaborates with the board to fulfill the organization’s mission.
  • Provides timely and accurate reports to the board, interfaces between the board and staff, and supports the board (through the Board Governance Committee) to fulfill its governance role and make informed decisions.
  • Works with board leadership to focus board attention on long-range strategic issues while ensuring optimal performance by the board, its committees, and individual board members in an ongoing manner.
  • Engages and empowers the board to be proactive and active stewards of the organization.
  • Participates in monthly board meetings and other committee meetings as required.

 

Building Operations and Facilities Management; Rentals and Events

  • Oversees the condition, care and maintenance of the historic Ebell campus and its collections.
  • Identifies and schedules required building repairs/maintenance consistent with board approved building master plan.
  • Manages preservation and restoration projects.
  • Assures compliance with all local, state and federal building regulations.
  • Supervises staff responsible for the organization’s external event rental business that includes wedding, corporate, theatre and filming rentals.
  • Manages catering and sales staff.
  • Assures the highest standards for food, beverage, catering, entertainment and other services.
  • Establishes and monitors all purchasing policies and procedures.

 

Human Resource Management and Staff Development

  • Assesses current and future personnel needs and makes recommendations to the board for improvements that help the organization achieve its mission and strategic goals.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, reviews and when necessary, dismisses staff.
  • Establishes and modifies job roles to encourage growth and improve efficiency.
  • Promotes a culture that rewards collaboration and productivity and reflects the Ebell’s values.

 

Membership and Volunteer Engagement

  • Supervises membership staff and collaborates with the board to develop and implement programs and policies to maximize membership enrollment and engagement.
  • Ensures efficient cooperation and harmonious collaboration between volunteers and staff.
  • Understands the membership base and creatively utilizes volunteer talents to supplement paid staff and maximize productivity to achieve strategic goals in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Ensures volunteers are engaged and recognized for their work.

 

Marketing, PR and Communications 

  • Develops and implements strategic communications plans to increase awareness of the club and engagement in its activities.
  • Oversees staff creation and distribution of communications materials for the Ebell including the website, monthly newsletters to members, program announcements, advertisements, press kits, press releases, materials for outreach and donor development, and social media postings.
  • Engages with community members and organizations to promote the Ebell and gain financial support.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Ideal candidates will have a proven leadership track record with a non-profit organization. Experience in a multi-use venue and/or mission-based organization of similar size and a passion for women’s issues are essential. An equal enthusiasm for historic preservation would be advantageous.

Key qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a relevant discipline such as general management, non-profit management or business. An MBA would be an advantage.
  • A minimum of seven to ten years of executive leadership and management experience, ideally with a non-profit.
  • A high degree of energy and creativity, with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Solid financial oversight experience, including non-profit accounting, budgeting and tax issues.
  • Fundraising and development experience with private foundations and individual donors.
  • Special events and food and beverage management experience are highly desirable.
  • Experience with a non-profit volunteer board and a membership organization.
  • Strong marketing, communications and public relations skills.
  • Administrative abilities in budget vendor negotiations and renovation project management.
  • A passion for women’s issues and historic preservation is essential.
  • Familiarity with operating and maintaining a historic building is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with relevant County and/or City of Los Angeles departments.
