The Ebell of Los Angeles is an educational and philanthropic organization founded by women, for women in 1894. Our mission is to participate in and encourage the educational, cultural and social growth of the diverse Los Angeles community; and to conserve and protect our historic Clubhouse, collections and Wilshire Ebell Theatre.
Inspired by scholar Dr. Adrian Ebell, the Ebell of Los Angeles was founded by women, for women in 1894. The non-profit organization remains dedicated to its original mission “to interest women in the study of all branches of literature, art and science and the advancement of women in every branch of culture.” The organization’s philanthropic endeavors include awarding scholarships to students and providing grants to charities that help at-risk women and children in the Los Angeles community.
The club also hosts social and cultural events that inspire and empower. It is a gathering place to connect with artists, educators, authors, entertainers, speakers and politicians. The Ebell has been honored to host diverse and outstanding women such as Amelia Earhart, the last Queen of Romania and Michelle Obama.
I wanted to help preserve the building and I was also impressed by the social services provided to women.

Diversity....I’m inspired by all the differences in backgrounds, education, professions of the members. I am highly motivated and inspired by the stories of the incredible women I met at the first event I attended. The topics addressed at the events have been so stimulating.

I have always been fascinated by “Women’s Clubs” but sometimes saw them simply as social opportunities. When I learned more about the Ebell, I was impressed by the diversity of women, the causes that the Club supports, and the continued learning opportunities available.

I love the notion of a women’s club, especially one with so much history around the area where I live. I love meeting women of all ages and am interested in helping to carry on the interests and good works of the Club moving forward.

Being a Special Needs teacher is a very giving job, as all teaching is. The year I was retiring I was looking for an organization where I could still give to people in need. I latched onto the Ebell’s motto, “I will find a way or I will make one.” Yes! It was just what I wanted. The Ebell is about helping those in need in so many ways.
