No institution can survive, thrive and continue without the support and loyalty of its constituents. Since the beginning, members of The Ebell have sought to maintain and build up their Club while improving their minds, expanding their vision and enriching their community. As this new millennium begins, the membership encompasses four generations of women who are mothers, daughters, granddaughters and grandmothers. There are those who were born before airplanes and antibiotics. There are those who know only a world with television and talk shows. Some are wives, others are widows, and some have made their lives as single women. The paths of their lives’ journeys include those just embarking on careers, those deep in the heart of their work, those who have retired, and those who have spent their lives as dedicated volunteers to causes large and small.
The Ebell members are teachers, artist, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, nurses, psychologists, computer specialists and a wide range of other vocations. Their diversity is growing as fast as California’s population changes. For them, The Ebell provides a forum for the constant interchange between the wisdom of the senior members and the contemporary know-how of the younger. But they have all come together for a common purpose: to learn from each other and to give their services and time to the Club and the broader community. Membership is by invitation. Recruitment of new members is an ongoing activity.
